Newsletter: Second Edition, January 2006

Dear FLOW members,

The great flow insight, from Mihaly Cziksentmihalyi, (Author of Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience), is that we are happiest when we are most productive, and most productive when we are happiest.

In a world in which there are too many people who feel as if life is meaningless, and too many problems without enough solutions, FLOW intends to act as an arbitrageur between people looking for personal happiness and well-being, on the one hand, and problems needing to be solved, on the other.

To catalyze the FLOW movement, we are expanding and focusing the FLOW community, beginning with new features on our web site, including:

  • Five new discussion groups providing opportunities to engage in dialog and collaboration
  • A Member Platform with featured article on FLOW Vision, Theory, and Action
  • Featured Media, Projects, and Organizations
  • A growing gallery of articles, resources, and projects

New Discussion Groups

With this issue of the FLOW newsletter, we are introducing five themed discussion boards.  In addition to catalyzing dialog and collaborative creativity, they will provide the foundations for a forthcoming FLOW wiki themed “An Open Source Business Plan to Make the World a Better Place.”

Four of the Discussion groups will focus on inter-related issues, encouraging entrepreneurial solutions to those address them.

  1. Opening the world to eliminate global poverty.
  2. Experiencing flow and building institutions to help others experience it.
  3. Empowering the marginalized.
  4. Ensuring sustainability.

The fifth Discussion group will allow for a general conversation on FLOW Vision, Theory, and Practice, initially focused each month on a specific article, published on the homepage of our web site.  For our first month, we will be focusing on the Reason Magazine debate between John Mackey and Milton Friedman on the social responsibility of business, a fascinating exchange for those who have not yet read it.

We invite you to participate in the FLOW Discussions and to begin to help FLOW to articulate a comprehensive, realistic, yet visionary array of solutions to all problems by means of entrepreneurial initiative.

As mentioned above, the first Member Platform will highlight FLOW co-founder John Mackey, in the context of a debate with Milton Friedman, published in Reason magazine early this year. Every month we will publish a new article written by or featuring a FLOW Member. We invite and encourage you to submit your papers for consideration.

Featured Media, Projects, And Organizations

Since ideas and information are core to FLOW and to stimulating dialog and creativity, FLOW will regularly present books, articles, and other media on the home page, as well as profiles of exemplary projects and organizations that embody FLOW principles. Given the various dimensions of FLOW, these will address theory, action, and the cultivation of personal flow practice.

In keeping with the intention of FLOW to foster entrepreneurial initiative to address challenges facing humanity and in the spirit of the holidays, this month we are featuring GlobalGiving, a web portal that facilitates charitable contributions to grass-roots entrepreneurial projects in developing countries that address social, environmental, and development issues. You can give directly to a project of your choice on behalf of your self or as a gift to someone else, communicate directly with the project leader, and track its progress.

Invitation

We invite you to submit books, articles and other media, as well as information about programs, projects, and organizations that embody the spirit of FLOW and that you think FLOW Members and others will appreciate.

And we encourage you to forward this newsletter to friends and others, and to invite them to join FLOW, and participate in our collaborative effort to Liberate the Entrepreneurial Spirit for Good.

Please let us know if you have any questions.  I’ll be active in the discussion groups, and look forward to exploring and clarifying issues with many of you there.

On behalf of the FLOW Board and Development Team, wishing you a happy holiday season and a FLOW-filled New Year.

Towards a sustainable peace, prosperity, and happiness for all of humanity,

Michael
